“SMALL
COMPANY… BIG SALES” Continued: Koster and Gormley met with Bryan who instantly had a huge smile on his face when he saw the DL.2’s. Bryan could not believe the images that the DL.2’s were projecting across the screen. The DL.2’s Collage Generator™ software feature had his mind racing with ideas and potential uses for his stage… (Which happens to be one of the largest on the east coast, measuring a mind boggling 120’ at the proscenium opening.) Bryan was extremely happy with the capabilities of the DL.2 and was excited about the possibilities of seeing these in use at his church. With the size of the projection surface (25’Hx95’W), the number of units needed was a real concern as far as the budgeting aspects go, so a minimal starting package was developed with room to grow that consisted of 10 High End DL.2’s, an Axon Media Server to manage all content, an additional DP2000 Processor, a complete Wireless DMX system from Wireless Solutions as well as a Rose Brand custom 25'10"H x 95'W seamless bleached white muslin for the main projection surface. With the sale pending, Bishop Don Meares of Evangel Cathedral, who was unable to attend LDI, requested a demo unit to see what he would be purchasing. Fortunately, Craig Burross with High End was doing a 3 unit demo & training session in Washington DC within days of the Bishop’s request, so another meeting was setup. The entire Production Team from Evangel went to DC and stayed for hours asking questions, and watching the demo. After the demo, Bishop Meares was so impressed with the DL.2’s that Koster Design was immediately called and informed the sale was a go. For sales and product support, Koster Design enlisted the help of Mike’s former employer and friend George Studnicky III, owner of Creative Stage Lighting in North Creek, NY. Mike worked extensively as the Production Manager in Creative’s touring department for almost a year. Knowing the kind of product service and support that Creative Stage Lighting is known for, as well as their close proximity to the client, Creative Stage Lighting was flagged as the obvious choice for the purchase, as well as the setup and prep location. All of the gear was shipped directly to Creative Stage Lighting, and a staff of 4 worked exclusively on setting up the DL.2’s, Wireless DMX and Axon Media Server to make sure the install went quickly with no downtime once on-site. The final package was then cased and trucked directly to the venue for the start of installation. Koster says “All of Creative’s crew was top notch and very knowledgeable on all aspects of the DL.2 and Axon Media Server. They gave us great support before, during, and after the sale.” The installation team consisted of Koster Designs staff member Cory Combow who is very versed in DL.1/Catalyst, Rich Jackson of Creative Stage Lighting who is a certified DL.2 tech, and Scott Chmielewski, a leading DL.2 programmer, who was also enlisted for his skills on the Hog III console. Scott is currently labeled as the top designer specifying and using the DL.2. A 3 day schedule was slated for the install which included the fixture hang, making all custom new DMX jumper cables, the wireless DMX install and the AXON integration. The new gear was rolled in at 9am and after only 1 day the system was up and ready to go with no wireless glitches, nor DL.2 issues. Scott took over on the 2nd day and went right to work on upgrading the software in the Hog III to the latest and greatest, patching fixtures, and setting up the console’s palettes for programming. In no time, a full collage of all 10 units was up, functioning and wowing the dancers and singers who were on stage rehearsing for Sunday service. In the end, this project turned out to be the largest permanent installation of the DL.2 onto one of the largest stages on the East Coast, by one of the biggest rising companies in the industry… Koster Design.
